andolfi Viandes has been based in Corsica for many years. The company has always been committed to offering quality products while ensuring the well-being of its employees. During the high tourist season, 2.5 to 3 million people come to Corsica to eat, so there's a lot to do to meet the huge demand at this time of year. This is where Managing Director Antoine Gandolfi sees the potential for skin packaging and the automation of his production lines.
Company
Gandolfi Viandes, France
Gandolfi Viandes, located in Bastia, Corsica, was founded in 2013. The meat business has been a family affair for 4 generations for François-Antoine Gandolfi, the company's managing director. In 2018, the Sodigav production company in Bastia was joined by a second company, Sogavia, in Ajaccio. Initially, Gandolfi Viandes was a butchery and poultry meat cutting and sales company (beef, pork, chicken, lamb). With its 45 employees, it now also produces processed products. Over the years, other markets have opened up: Gandolfi now supplies its products to supermarkets, traditional butchers, as well as hotel-restaurants and institutional catering.

The challenge

A seasonal peak with specific products (kebabs, tartars, barbecues)

The summer season marks a sustained rhythm in Gandolfi's production of products suitable for barbecuing. Tourists flock to hotel dining rooms, restaurants and campsites to grill. Nevertheless, producing the necessary quantities remains a constant challenge. Production is slowing down: labelling trays - whether vacuum-packed or in conventional film - is still done manually or semi-automatically at Gandolfi.

High-quality presentation for discerning buyers

The company extends the shelf-life of many products by skin-packing them. The color of the product changes because there is no oxygen supply, and the meat oxidizes. The meat regains its color when the tray is opened, thanks to oxygenation. This is why, in the future, trays must be presented in a more qualitative way to local consumers in order to gain market share.

The solution

Fully automated weighing and labelling

After an in-depth market study, Antoine Gandolfi opted for a solution from Bizerba, his long-standing partner. For his two production lines, he invested in two GLM-Ievo labeling systems with Bizerba CleanCut® technology. The systems weigh and label packaged products fully automatically. The CleanCut® solution includes the machines and associated labels. It's a holistic approach that's in place from the very start of the project to meet the customer's needs. Indeed, its marketing department developed the label design directly with the Bizerba factory in the UK. Previously, two labels were applied to the tray, partially concealing the product.

High-quality labelling for demanding buyers

GLM-Ievos can label trays of different sizes and materials, whether skinned or vacuum-packed. Gandolfi Viandes distinguishes its foodservice products by applying the label to the top. The Bizerba solution adapts to these specific requirements by adding a labeling head to the CleanCut machine. For large surfaces, linerless label strips are required. These labels wrap around the tray, offering plenty of space for branding, brand messages and clear product information. GLM-Ievos are integrated in a minced meat line and in a processed products line.

Fewer roller changes, less waste

Thanks to the elimination of the glassine backing, a roll of CleanCut® Linerless can hold 90% more labels. This reduces the time needed to change rolls. What's more, paper waste due to the backing material disappears altogether. With Bizerba's CleanCut® technology, the cutting zones are glue-free. As a result, there is much less glue build-up on the cutting blades, and they need to be cleaned much less often - another labor-saving feature.

The benefits

Increased productivity and lighter workloads

Automation means greater productivity in end-of-line processes, and less dependence on absent workers. Employees who previously labelled manually can now be put to more effective use. "The strain on muscles and joints during manual labelling is not negligible. The team appreciates this reduction in workload", explains the Manager.

Quick product changes

Relatively frequent product changeovers mean minimal downtime. This is ensured, for example, by simple roller replacement. Package size, label position and print area can be set automatically, and the correct print data for the activated item can be called up via PLU management. Antoine Gandolfi sums up: "We've been able to increase productivity and relieve the team. Thanks to high-quality labeling on our consumer products, we're well on the way to increasing our market share with national customers".
