Customers make their purchasing decisions within three seconds in front of the shelf. What part does the label of a product play in this?

A label is the central marketing element for the majority of product packaging. Because it helps provide guidance on the shelf: consumers will find their favourite brand immediately, or become aware of new products. If consumers then look more closely, the label provides them with all the information they need about the product – from legal aspects to usage recommendations. Last but not least, the label can also support the emotional purchasing decision, by conveying a good feeling with its design.  

Take honey, for example. Without a label, it would be a screw-top jar with colourful liquid that could be anything. The label makes it clear that this is a jar of honey. The more elegant the label is, the higher the value of the honey appears to be too. A brand is made up of both informative and emotional aspects. This means that only the label makes the brand out of a brand.

What makes a good label?

It's quite simple, really: a good label has to stick well to the product. Of course, it's a lot more complex than that in reality. Every label, no matter how inconspicuous, is a combination of several components that only achieve their effect when working together. So the right label material has to be selected, as well as the right adhesive. Then the product packaging, labelling machine conditions, transport, storage and later use of the product have to go under the microscope. Are special certificates required? Are there requirements with regards to recycling? All these questions have to be answered in order to find the perfect label.
